History comes alive in Appomattox each April! From April 8-12, interact with living historians in period dress, watch firing demonstrations, see where Lee Surrendered at the McLean House, watch the “stacking of the arms” and so much more at the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park! Just up the road from the park, you can visit the American Civil War Museum, which also has free activities On April 11 & 12 including musket and artillery demonstrations, hearth cooking in a reconstructed cabin, and interactive portrayals of soldiers and civilians. You can also take a self-guided tour of the grounds through Clover Hill Village and immerse yourself in history.
Throughout the weeklong April 8-12 commemoration, guests can participate in a rich variety of special programs designed to bring history to life. The schedule includes guided walks and talks that explore key locations around the park, along with immersive living‑history experiences that showcase the daily lives of soldiers and civilians during the final days of the war.
Free daytime activities on April 11 & 12 include authentic Union and Confederate encampments, musket and artillery demonstrations, hearth-cooking in a reconstructed cabin, and interactive portrayals of soldiers and civilians reflecting the final days of the Civil War in April 1865.
The weekend culminates in a ticketed $10 evening luminary tour on April 12, “Voices of Appomattox: April 1865,” a lantern-lit theatrical experience interpreting the battles, surrender, emancipation, and the war’s lasting impact.
Self-guided tours of Clover Hill Village are available year-round during daylight hours. The village features historic sites such as the Vermillion General Store and Post Office, the circa-1830 Martin/Grady Family Log Cabin, Wesley Chapel (1828), the early-1900s Hardy School, Hamilton’s Blacksmith Shop, and the Dixon Memorial Farm Equipment Display, highlighting community life, education, craftsmanship, and agriculture.
