A Small Town with a Rich, Diverse History

Historic Appomattox Virginia – Where Our Nation Reunited

Nestled near the center of Virginia, between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west and the Tidewater region to the east, Appomattox County lies in the rolling hills of Virginia’s Piedmont Region.

Appomattox is widely known for the events of April 1865 when Confederate Gen. R. E. Lee surrendered to Union Gen. U. S. Grant in the small village of Appomattox Court House, now preserved as the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, located just north of the Town of Appomattox.

For those who appreciate outdoor recreation, the area offers several state parks, including Holliday Lake and the recently opened High Bridge Trail, a 30+ multi-use trail for walking, cycling, and horseback riding. James River State Park has canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and camping. Depending on the time of year, there are also craft fairs and art shows, theater experiences and concerts, and more in the town and its surrounding area. A lot happens in the middle of this small town for those open to new experiences and a rural lifestyle.
